Best of Southeast Asia shoots for glory

Each week, more youth are taking up ice hockey in Asia, particularly in the Southeast Asia region. This has led to the creation of the Southeast Asia Youth Cup, set to take place in 2017 at Sunway Pyramid Ice in Bandar Sunway, Malaysia.

Host Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will field their top players between the ages of 12-15 at this inaugural tournament. Despite the growing number of activities available to the youth in Asia, ice hockey has been able to sustain its expansion in the past five years. Tournaments such as the Southeast Asia Youth Cup are one of many avenues for the young hockey players to showcase their skills and create a lifelong bond to the sport.

The tournament is a result of sustained development efforts of the participating southeast Asian countries in ice hockey. With the help of the sport’s governing body, the International Ice Hockey Federation, the countries were able to double their efforts to grow the number of youth players in the region. It is the aim of the participating countries to build on this development through a systematic progression plan. In this regard, programs were tailor made for each country to ensure its sustainability.
